A Plan For Survival The alarms were loud. It was how they were supposed to be, and yet, as I tried to work out what was going on, I couldn’t understand why they were loud. What was happening? Breathing deeply, I remembered where I was, which was all I managed to do before the stasis chamber was opened. My brother looked down at me, holding one hand out to help me. Taking it, eyes meeting with his for a moment, I let him do most of the work, the alarm even louder as it echoed through the metal hallways. Like I expected he was already prepared, our emergency bags beside…

  • A Plan for Survival?

Sabotage? “We don’t know them.” I raised an eyebrow. “I don’t know you.” His eyes met with mine. “Lucien, I appreciate you helping me, because I don’t know if I’d have been able to get off the Paladin otherwise. This…” Gesturing, at a loss for words, I bit down on my bottom lip. “We know nothing about this world. Surviving isn’t going to be an easy task, and I believe more of us will make them simpler. Especially if we are somewhere dangerous.” Lucien glanced at Alex and Bonnie. “Trusting them might be a mistake.” “Anything could be, but they have skills we don’t. Skills we’re likely going to need.”…

  • Sabotage?

Escape Keeping a ship like the Paladin on track to get to where we were meant to be going was complicated. We were all mortal, so we had to make use of stasis to make sure there would be someone there for the entire journey. Each crew worked a little differently, but, for us, the system meant keeping ten of the hundred crew awake at any one time, with the rest in stasis. Our job, in general, was relatively simple. The ships were made to last, and I’d never known one not get to where they were supposed to be. Of course there was no way back for us. We’d…

  • Escape

Alarms blared. Confusion swept through me. I remembered, vaguely, being put into stasis, to make the long journey to one of the worlds furthest from everything I knew. Coming to the way I had wasn’t a good sign. Something I’d gone over multiple times was what to do if there was an emergency, and I focused on the voice in the back of my mind, telling me I needed to be grabbing the emergency bag they’d set up for me. Pushing myself from the bed, arms weak, I found the bag easily. The door to the room was open, and the sound was almost too much for me. Yet I…

  • The Attack

A hand grabbed my arm. Before I had any real idea what was going on I found myself being tugged outside, by someone I soon realised was a very insistent Blake. Not fighting wasn’t so much a choice, but more something I did purely out of confusion, because being in a place like the convention I was at was more than a little unusual for him. Once we were out he didn’t stop tugging. That, however, was when I stopped letting him tug, instead stopping where I was and staring at him. He turned to look at me then. When his eyes met with mine I could see the mix…
