• Rescuing the Trapped

Dawn coloured the sky in pinks and peaches. Standing for a second I looked down at Stormrock, seeing the town as it could be rather than as it was, Mile’s imagination helping to create the place we all wanted it to be. Turning, I got my first sight of the flaming metal ship which was minutes from crashing into the ground. I didn’t stop to think. Sprinting for the door nearest me, the hospital, I threw it open. “We’ll likely have some injured people coming in soon, Alex.” He stared at me. “Something’s coming down from space, and it’s not looking good.” For a second he continued to stare at…

  • More Planning

Changes Jessie’s closeness to Mile shouldn’t have bothered me. I’d known her for hours, the same way he had, and from the way she’d been acting it was obvious she was a friendly person. Yet there was this flash of jealousy, quickly quelled. There was no logical reason for it, but then I knew better than to think emotions were logical, especially as it probably wasn’t so much her. More a flicker of memory. From the smile he gave her it was obvious how much he needed the support. I’d done what I could to be there for Mile, as a friend. With professional support, from a builder willing to…

More About Stormrock As I reached town hall I glanced back, to see Arlo was already holding Jessie in his arms. Smiling, I shook my head, remembering all the times he’d been there to help me. Pushing the door open I stepped inside, the same way I had back when we first arrived in Stormrock. Only it was a very different situation. Instead of walking into a room which almost looked the way it might have done back before the war I’d found myself in darkness. Had it only been the darkness I wouldn’t have worried too much. The growling from the corner was something else entirely. Fortunately Arlo was…

  • More About Stormrock

Plans For Stormrock Galen led us to the back of the ruins of the building they’d managed to claim one room from to make town hall, and from there it was possible for me to see more of Stormrock. Gently, Arlo set me on the remnants of one of the walls, before sitting beside me. We looked out at what had once probably been a sprawling port town. In some places nothing was left behind, and in other ruins similar to the one I was sitting on. “Before the war a road led from here to the sea.” Galen sat on the other side, sounding wistful. “There are parts of…

  • Plans for Stormrock

Complications Nodding, I looked at Mile. His eyes were on Galen, who, in turn, was focused on Jessie, the worry in her voice entirely understandable. Before making the decision to join Galen at Stormrock I’d heard of Mile, but never had a chance to get to know him. All the time we’d spent together working on the first steps changed everything. What I’d heard didn’t in any way describe the man I’d come to very much like. The two of us were very different people, with ambitions leading us in opposite directions, until they came together in the strangest of places. Mile shrugged. “Our conversation showed me you are the…

  • Complications

A Conversation/Lessons “Oh, so you’re going to try to use me to bypass the issue of the others not being as open minded?” I smiled back. “Trust me, I’ve been there, so I understand why you’d do it, but I don’t want to cause more problems.” “They can bring any of their complaints to me.” Galen shrugged. “It’s not like they don’t already. They think Mile’s inclusion is purely due to us being family, and not because he was the best person for the job. Unfortunately for us it does mean they can be less inclined to listen, as they don’t believe I’m willing to argue with my own nephew,…

  • Lessons

A Strange New World Stepping out of town hall I took a few seconds to work out my next steps, so I’d be back as quickly as possible. I trusted my people to do what needed to be done when it came to the ship itself, but that wasn’t the only thing we needed to be worrying about, as it was probably going to draw in the monsters around Stormrock. Even though we were used to dealing with them the situation was unusual. We couldn’t know what might happen. Jogging back up the hill the scent of burnt metal hit me once more, a reminder of what could have been.…

  • A Strange New World

The New Arrivals Something I noticed more than I probably normally would have done was how warm Arlo was. There was an urge to simply let myself wrap around him, to steal that warmth, which I could only explain as related to the after effects of being in stasis for a long period of time. Him being an attractive man most definitely didn’t help, but I pushed those thoughts aside as best I could. I’d just met him. He was helping me a time when I was at me weakest, in so many ways, making it natural for me to feel the way I was feeling. Galen being there helped…

  • The New Arrivals

The Crashed Ship “Arlo, do you know much about what happened to the ship?” Galen glanced at me. “I know you managed to get one of the engineers off the ship.” “Yes, Tom. He wanted to share everything he knew, as I’m pretty sure he believed he’d die before we managed to get him off the ship, and it was important to him we knew we needed to be careful. The engines were damaged in such a way he believed someone sabotaged the ship. However he never found out who it was. There is a chance they’re one of the survivors here.” I looked at the young woman in the…

  • The Crashed Ship

Rescuing the Trapped Waking to the sound of blaring alarms was terrifying. Finding I was trapped, unable to move from the stasis bay, was a hundred times worse. They were meant to automatically open, especially in cases where there was an emergency. Breathing in deeply, doing my best to stay calm through the very worst experience of my life, I thought through what I could do in order to free myself. During orientation we were told, should there be any kind of emergency, it was best to focus on getting yourself to safety, so it didn’t seem likely trying to get the attention of someone else would help in any…
